Greetings! I have returned from the beautiful Monterey coast, refreshed and ready for anything. After a women-only trip, filled with good food, much wine, and always raucous laughter, I returned to my family feeling more patient and calm than I have in a while.

It was only a few days, but I will admit I did not stick to my plan. I drank water and took long walks along the ocean each day (sometimes with company, sometimes alone). I made fairly good choices at the restaurants, but I snacked a lot, I drank more wine than normal, I stayed up too late, and I didn't track anything. But none of this is really unexpected and I will get myself back on track. Already, I found it was so nice just to make dinner for my family and to curl up on the couch with a cup of tea in the evening. I got to bed at a more sensible time and got a full night's sleep.

I forgot to weigh in this morning, so I will do that soon. I still have my in-laws returning for another weekend stay. I am going to cook at home on Friday night when they get back to us, so that will help me as I get back into a healthy mindset.

I am off to meet a friend for a hike. Have a great day.

If you ever get the chance to visit Death Valley, go! It is an amazing place. We had a wonderful trip. We spent a few days in Death Valley, then continued on to Zion National Park, then Bryce Canyon. We returned home, exhausted, but refreshed and renewed by all the incredible natural beauty we had experienced.

Surprisingly, I did not gain weight on the road trip! I was frankly shocked when I got on the scale this morning, expecting there to be some ill effects from the many restaurant meals I had eaten and the snacks consumed (sparingly, at least) during those hours on the road. Apparently I did something right. Staying even is better than I had hoped for!

Now, I have to chip away at those pesky few pounds to get me back down to my goal weight. We do have company in town later this week, followed by a girls' trip to the ocean for a couple days. I get back and two days later, more house guests! I am feeling more confident that I am in control of my eating and I hope to continue making good choices for myself.

I feel like I am getting back in the groove. I have been making much better decisions about eating past two days. Have cleared the tempting snacks out and put some more reasonable choices in the house.

My big challenge is that we leave for a road trip to the desert in two days. While there will be some hiking, there will be a lot of time spend sitting in a car. Also, we are traveling with a friend who is not terribly fit and two kids who seem to run into an existential wall if forced to hike too long (Why are we here? What does it mean?! :) ). I have to be satisfied with a mile here and 2 miles there throughout the day. I have been doing my best to prepare healthy snacks for the car ride. I will also be eating out a lot. I am hoping to avoid fast food altogether, but sometimes that is all you can find by the roadside. I will just have to do the best I can when the time comes.

I am glad that I have gotten back to tracking food and paying more attention to making healthy choices. I think that will serve me well on our trip.
