05 April 2017

I have been taking steps to get back into a healthy groove again. The house has been cleared of all the dreadfully tempting snacks to which I had no resistance. My children have been grumbling about how they don't have good treats in their lunches, but I am ignoring that. In fact, I told them that we need to do some spring cleaning for the pantry and we need to finish off these second and third tier snacks before I buy anything else. The plan is to only bring back those things I can resist when I am ready.

I quit the gym a while back because I was not going. I have been getting a lot of exercise, mostly hike (but a LOT of hiking!), and I much prefer to be outside and doing something to using a machine at the gym. Yesterday, I researched some home weight training workouts and kicked off the program. I am sure it will take some trial and error to find what will work for me at home, but I am determined and motivated to make it work at home rather than joining another gym.

I have decided to cut back on alcohol. I had gotten into the habit of having a glass of wine with dinner (or two) or maybe having a beer or two in the evening. I will limit consumption to social occasions and remove those calories from the daily routine.

I also plan to cut back on my sugar intake, which had gotten out of control recently (see my snack clear out above!). The more sweet treats I eat, the more I want, so I am going to cut way back in hopes of quelling those cravings. I have fruit to eat when I do need sweet things. I have some chocolate covered almonds for emergencies.

I am sure there are more steps to be taken, but I want to rebuild my healthy habits and I will have more success if I don't try to do everything at once. I think it is a good start.

14 March 2017

I have entered week 3 of the new 5:2 plan. I find the fasting days are not too difficult. I have been able to work within that small amount of calories and have successfully been able to resist the temptations to blow it with sweet treats or crusty bread.

My problem in the past week was that the in between days were filled with sweet treats. I did not have a good eating week as we hosted game night (with beer added to the snacks), doughnuts finally won the siege (although I had a houseful of tween girls that woke up and pretty much decimated the box of doughnuts before I made too much of a pig of myself), a mystery bag of fun size Milky Way bars was uncovered in the pantry, and I gave in to other assorted over-indulgences. Part of the issue is that I slacked off on logging my food.

This week, we have big things planned, so I have to have my plan firmly in mind. Fasting went well yesterday. Today should be fairly low key, but I will be eating two meals out tomorrow and then we have reservations for a fancy French restaurant on Thursday for my husband's birthday. I will make healthy choices and not go overboard. I will work on losing this I-can-eat-whatever-I-want-because-I-have-been-fasting idea that has taken up residence in the back of my head. I will log what I eat.

Be strong today, my friends.

Did fairly well yesterday, although I felt extremely hungry all day. I tried not to pig out, but I ate a little more than I probably should have.

I did make it out for a hike yesterday. It rained again over the weekend and this was my first time out since. I went to a park I had not visited for a while and the puppy and I hit the trail. About a mile into the hike, I encountered a very muddy spot. This wasn't unusual of late, but I guess my luck finally ran out because my foot slid out from under me and I went down into the mud! After the initial annoyance, I found it kind of funny, mentally telling myself the mud was winning today. Mud 1, Me 0. Well, I had to give another point to the mud later, as I went through a stretch of trail in which my feet sunk all the way to the ankle into the mud for several steps. I swear the crows were laughing at me!
