newagegirl's Journal, 30 Apr 10

This morning I am going to try something new in hopes of getting my weight loss going again. I am going to try drinking my coffee black! Caffeine is definitely a no-no on Atkins, but I'm so hooked - been drinking coffee since high school. (A lot of coffee... typically around two pots a day.)

Despite that, I still lost a lot of weight doing Atkins last year. Once the weight loss stopped, I admitted to myself that it could very well be the caffeine... If not the coffee itself, then probably all the cream, and the two-million aspartame packets I yummied it up with. (I definitely go over my 20 induction-carbs with just coffee and fixins alone)

I think it worked for me the first five months because I had SO much to lose that the weight came off regardless. And now... well, I still have a lot to lose, but not as much as before. It's no secret that the bigger you are, the faster you lose. So it kinda makes sense.

Anyway, my first cup of coffee this morning was just the way I like it - loaded, light and yummy. (I'm just not ready to start my day off without it yet.) Now I'm working on my second cup and it's completely black. Better, right? My logic says that since I'm not crazy about the way this tastes, I might be able to consume less and less coffee every day. We'll see.

I know this is a sad topic to journal about - so, "sorry" if you took the time to read this. But coffee is a major part of my daily routine, so I felt compelled to share my feelings. That's what writers do --- we have tortured souls, you know! :)

Oh dear! You wrote: Caffeine is definitely a no-no on Atkins. New Atkins, New You (published this March) says you can drink coffee, caffeine and all. I quote "Drinking coffee and other caffeinated beverages increases urine output, but research indicates that it doesn't contribute to creating water or electrolyte imbalances. Caffeine also gently assists the body in burning fat. That means you can count coffee and caffeinated tea (in moderation) toward your fluid intake". This is on page 81 of the book. Don't beat yourself up over it though. One strong coffee won't kill you whichever Atkins you're following. However, if you are following "old" Atkins you will find there are a few rules that "new" Atkins has deleted. Enjoy your coffee. Best, Christine

I drink black coffee without cream or sweetners.Sweetners taste like chemicals to me.I found coffee kills my appetite and elevates mood.I drink only 2cups a day and thats nothing obligatory cause I go without it.

I have 4 cups every morning black. Sometimes 2 in afternoon. I have noticed it changes my ketostix color to lower purple for a few hours so I backed off drinking it in the afternoon.

Coffee is allowed on Atkins. I can drink lots of coffee and it has never affected my ketosis or weight loss. Just be sure you are drinking your required water as well. Omitting the cream and sweeteners is a good idea, but you can still have your coffee. If you need it sweet, put some Atkins shake into it. These wont stall your loss.
