I have diabetes. I have diabetes. I have diabetes....

There, I said it out loud.

Yes, it has been an interesting week for ole MamaGroot. Went to the doctor on Wed for annual check-in, slip to get bloodwork, sign for my renewal of my H tags. Thursday morning get the blood draws; Thurs at 5 p.m. doc is calling my house leaving a message. Call to doc early Friday morning and by 9 a.m., my world is turned upside down: blood sugar so high, he wants me in the office RIGHT NOW to discuss treatment options! WTH?

Yep. Game changer for sure, and off I go into the wide world of insulin injections, blood sugar monitoring and ???.

So ya, that was my week. In other news, weight stayed the same; I was not 100% on plan -- had a few high carby meals/days. Blech. Now though, I have more reason than EVER to stick with this like a wild woman. Too much out there says that LCHF is the way to deal with blood sugars, and I am NOT gonna follow the nurse advice of eating 50g of carbs per meal/15g per snack....noper nope.

Good thing I already was re-committing to myself, because I am worth it!

That is so scary to hear! Glad you are recommitting. There are several folks here who have diabetes and several who have gone of medication. I hope you can exchange info and help with them.

Well, I was diagnosed pre diabetic ... 2012. I have been on Keto <20 g carbs since June 4th. Fasting BS has been just under 100 for the past 3 weeks. I am not certain I can dodge this bullet...but if I do it will be because of the Keto way of eating. From 2012 til May 2017...I never had BS < 112. So my BS is going in the right direction. My holler to you, my friend, STAY THE COURSE. MY best to you.

Check out the Diet Doctor website, probably one of the most informative about LCHF and diabetes and other conditions. Also, Dr. Bernstein's you tube series. And dr. Hyman book on the Blood Sugar Solution. These are all good resources. Learn and Live :)

Bless your heart MamaGroot! I got my diabetes diagnosis January of this year. Went to the doctor for something else and had routine bloodwork. Boom. I started Keto in February. Blood sugar is now 95-120. Have lost over 40 pounds and inflammation in my body is down. I don't feel hungry or fee as if I'm missing anything. It is easily something that we can do for the rest of our lives. We can get diabetes under control, and get off medications...however we will never be able to eat Willy-nilly, carefree like we used to. I'm ok with that. Check out Pinterest as well. Just search "Keto". So much information and recipes there. Best of luck to you my dear. You can totally do this! ❤️

Take care of it. If you don't you will end up with a diabetic pump the it is to late. Like myself 😩

I wish my BH was on social media. A diabetes dx in November 2015 was their wakeup call. Immediately went LC IF, with 2-3 splurge days between 3-month A1C periods. Now not even pre-diabetic. Their starting point was discouraging on many levels; doctors said that nutrition alone would not make difference. Could not exercise for first year, but steadily improved A1C results. If they can do it, you've definitely got this!

My business partner was diagnosed with diabetes a decade ago. He changed his diet and lifestyle, has never taken an insulin injection and has managed his disease and lost about 40 lbs in the process. There are healthier options beyond traditional medicine. You have to listen to Dr. Jason Fung before you make any decisions... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFJ5Sv5ifes

my husband was diagnosed pre-diabetes and the doctor right away wanted to put him on metformin. My husband refused to take the pills and instead changed his bad eating habits and ate very low carb , ate healthier. Lost some weight and kept his sugar levels in the 100 range. The doctor was impressed. I always tell my family," Think of food as your medicine. You are what you eat..I lost 70lbs and kept it off for 20 years because my doctor warned me of diabetes. Food is only fuel for your body and it should be clean and useful. Eating all those junky stuff is so toxic and it just builds up in your system and creates problems. Life is short and try to take care of yourself to enjoy it.

Thank you ALL!! Yes, I will be wholeheartedly doing KETO/LCHF (how can I get that as my diet, it's' not on the list here; and how is it not on the list here??)....for now, I have made the decision to take this small-ish dose of med, work really hard at being very strict, monitor the BS levels and take it from there. Had a very informative and encouraging conversation with NP who supports LCHF for diabetes, from a diabetes support page that PROMOTES LCHF, and she passed on how she chooses to treat her patients (wink, wink) and I have a plan to approach my doctor when I get to a certain number in my readings. As for all the websites, and names mentioned by each of you: beat ya to it, I've been reading/listening/learning from those sites for past 48 hours -- my head is about to explode with information overload -- but it's GREAT information! So thank you all again, and I will be here more faithfully now, as it will become my accountability place!

Stop telling yourself you have a disease and start telling yourself you're going to get healthy! Yes, LCHF is the way to go! I highly recommend Dr Jason Fung's book, The Obesity Code. He works with people with diabetes everyday. :-)

Get yourself on the keto diet if not already on it as it can reverse it.

I'm with you, MamaGroot. I was diagnosed and prescribed meds 8 days ago. I picked up the meds and sat at the kitchen table and cried on the bottle. I don't want to be diabetic. I don't want to have to take meds and insulin.... I know where that will lead me. I ransacked my kitchen that night and made a grocery list of all the low carb items I'm going to need to survive. I was a low carber years ago (Atkins).... lost 160# and kept it off till I got tired of being harassed about what I would eat...... never again will I give up on myself like that. Those people don't have to live in this body or deal with consequences of what gets put into it. Dinner that night was a mishmash of what I could scrape together that was low carb.... it wasn't much tbh. I have been on <20 carbs a day since the 29th of July (8 days) and my blood sugars went from 350's to 105 this morning! Last Monday I talked to my doctor who is sceptical of this working. She was not happy with me when I told her I'm doing this til my next appointment (I'm a Lil stubborn that way)...... if there is no improvement I would agree to start the meds. I'm looking forward to seeing the look on her face next week. This is my life now. I'm okay with not eating junk. I just remind myself of what I don't want to miss. There is too much left I want to accomplish / experience.

i used keto to get off of insulin. if you do go the keto route make sure you check your blood sugar at least three times a day. keto had my fasted blood sugar at 57 on some mornings so you have to be very watchful. sadly i stopped using keto gained 65 of the 90 pounds i lost back and this past january i had an alc of 9. thru intermittent fasting i was recently down to a 6.5 and i'm going to get it lower. make sure whatever you do and however you do it, it is a way of eating you want to do for the rest of your life and not just a way to drop some pounds. you can do this

I was and am considered a diabetic and follow a Low Carb Moderate Protein and Moderate Fat Ketogenic diet and have lost over 120 lbs in the last 2 years. My A1C's are in the 5-6 range regularly now even though I eat a few more carbs than most on keto. I eat a VERY high fiber diet so my net carbs for a day run between 15-40g and my protein is between 40-90g depending on my activity levels with never more than 30g per meal (your body doesn't process more than that.) I have 3 different immune conditions as well as diabetes so ended up having to go to the extreme of gastric surgery. You are lucky. You can do it without that! 🙋🏻
