I would like the LCHF people out there to let me know if you have ever been on the web site called Low-carb-Scams.com. I run across this today and am not sure how to take it. I do feel I can't always trust what some of the labels say so it's a problem on who to trust according to her it really a big problem. It seems that LC product nutrition labels should be governed by the same board that governs regular food products. Any imput would be great. I mean can you trust what it says on almond flour and so forth? It's a rough journey trying to figure out what your doing and wanting to do it correctly without some company lying to you.

I haven't. Sounds like a scam itself.
Here's the deal. The analysing of food is a science, but may not be exact. When I have questions, I go here:
http://ndb.nal.usda.gov/ndb/search
The USDA database is the standard and has, for example, lots of info on almonds, from whole to ground. So you don't have to take the manufacture's word for it.

If it has sugar alcohols avoid it, if it doesn't saying no sugar added.... Sugar is added, if it said low fat... Think high sugar.

If it say less than one gram of sugar (<1g), it has at least 1 1/2 grams of sugar!

bexa raven thanks for the web site I will be using it. I'm just trying to do what's good for me and she's kinda messed with my head.

mahjohn I've come to believe sugar alcohols are bad yet they still say to subtract them from the total carbs to get net carbs. I don't know how they get away with it.

SheaDlady, can you explain to me where you came up with the 1 1/2 sugar grams when it says <1g I always thought you were suppose to consider it1g.

My version of low carb restricts anything processed, so no Atkins bars and other "low-carb" snack products are out.

The reason you subtract sugar alcohols from total carbs is that they do not produce an insulin response, however, they are not easily tolerated due to intestinal pains and lose bowels. What they also do is akin to artificial sweeteners, they signal the brain via the tongue that sweets are incoming.... but without the reward of sugars, the brain does not get the high it wants, and you have done nothing to rid yourself of your sugar addiction.

I agree with Phil. The less processing, the better.

philmck, I understand about processed foods and I do try to stay away most of the time. But I do like to use LC ingredients to make home made things but even doing that you need to be able to believe what they say on then because you have to use the nutritional info on them to get all your numbers. Sometimes I feel like I'm finding my way in the dark but I'll keep at it and maybe get most of it right. I am thankful for everyone's input.

I always just use that formula (<1 = 1 1/2) to make sure I don't get any extra carbs! Not scientific, but hey, I'm battling for my health here, don't need their stealth carbs.

I like SheaDlady's formula, erring on the side of caution!
