It’s been a rough week. We lost a beloved member of our family Friday night. Tallulah, our 12-year-old “Florida cur” terrier, is gone.
Tallulah (Lulu) quit eating except for treats, and we got her into the vet Monday morning. Labs indicated her liver enzymes were very high (versus normal 5 months ago), and she was hospitalized to boost her health. When we picked her up from the vet to visit the specialist on Thursday afternoon, her condition had degenerated drastically. The specialist found very aggressive hemangiocarcinoma of the spleen and liver, and Tallulah was given days before the cancer took her. We made her as comfortable as we could, but were afraid she might be in pain. She wouldn’t say.
With that fear and concern, we took her to the urgent care vet Friday night. Lulu peacefully passed, surrounded with love and kisses. My husband said he lost a little piece of his heart.
Lulu will always be loved and missed. She was a great dog, funny, punked other dogs, and punked us as well.
We love you, Lulu.

Juliem3:
I don’t know where you live, but please plan ahead in case your dog is in pain. I hope you find better ways of treating any possible pain then we had, which is why I am writing the information below.
The vet said Lulu could “bleed out” and be in pain before we could get a vet appointment. We wanted something for her (possible) pain.
TBH, we have pain meds in the house leftover from surgeries (I can’t take codeine or morphine). However, I wanted a liquid or a patch for Lulu rather than forcing a pill down her throat. For example, in Wisconsin, a friend had a vet prescribe liquid morphine For the friend’s Jack Russell; and our late puppy- girl Jessie had a pain patch after TPLO when we lived in North Carolina.
But on Friday, I discovered that the only DEA-licensed vet wasn’t available. We were told It wasn’t legal for the remaining 3 vets to write a script to take to a pharmacist for the needed controlled meds.
I’m going to speak with a compounding pharmacist as well as the DEA certified vet and get some information for use in the future.
