Loch_Tess's Journal, 23 Aug 15

Whew! Down a pound and a half. What a relief. I was starting to think that what I'm doing just wasn't working.

I faced my biggest challenge last night, and I completely failed. I developed an increasingly bad headache that turned into a migraine, and none of my meds were helping. I ended up eating some chocolate and drinking a glass of Amarula, and I spent most of the night on the couch, listening to Law & Order episodes with a sleep mask on.

The thing about using food to treat pain is that, a lot of times, it does help. Those endorphins work hard. Obviously, though, it's no long term solution. I am seeing a great neurologist and taking several medications, and we're going to try Botox injections sometime in the next month, so I'm doing everything I can to find a better solution--including losing weight.

I'm realizing, too, how vital sleep is to weight loss. I work third shift, so getting enough sleep isn't always easy, especially with a boyfriend and four dogs who are on a normal schedule. It's another thing to work on.

Overall, I feel really good today. I feel good about what I'm doing. I'm not miserable, I'm not afraid of eating, I'm not going too far with the diet. I was once very close to developing an eating disorder, so setting a reasonable goal for myself it important. I know it will take me two or more years to reach my goal, but that's okay with me. It's more important that I do this in a rational, sustainable, healthy way than it is to lose as much weight as possible, as quickly as possible.

Have you tried Topramax for the migrain my Dr prescribed it and it really helped. It's usually used for seizures. I never thought about food helping pain, I have Fibromyalgia and when it's bad I want to eat more but I thought I was feeding the depression constant pain can cause especially since I'm in constant pain with my back. That gives me another way to look at it.

I also have fibromyalgia, Addie Aline. The best thing I've found for it is consistent cardio exercise. It's worked better for me than any of the medications available (and I've tried them all). I have seen more than half a dozen neurologists and finally found one who knows what he's doing. I have been on every migraine med available, plus a million different supplements, and have tried Topramax twice, plus it's new long-release form once, and I'm never able to tolerate it. The only thing we haven't tried is Botox, which has had excellent results for a lot of chronic migraine patients. I'm currently taking verapamil and using the Zomig nasal spray for an abortive. My neurologist recommends rooibos tea for migraines and headaches in general.
