You are all so kind and caring, and I cannot truly express how much that means to me. But there is something I want you to know. I would much, much prefer just dropping dead from a heart attack tomorrow to living so long I'm no longer able to live on my own and care for myself. I choose quality of life over quantity if I'm given a choice. I have lived a good life, and do not believe that death ends in darkness, so I do not fear what lies ahead.

I read your profile -- and you have had an amazing career -- like mine, serving in the nonprofit world. And you are of a people -- Louisiana Cajuns -- with the strength to survive hurricanes, gators, snakes and God knows what else. So I know how strong you must be and how good your heart is. I am just 5 years behind you in age, and I have struggled with my weight all my life, so I know that journey as well. There's a lot of quality life to be lived in independent and assisted living communities. Can you make a plan to relocate to a more sheltered community?

I feel that way. I'm soon to be 69. I jus came in from first walk. had cortizone knee shot yday. for the most part I'm ok and still on my own. fairly healthy. but as I watch people go. I pray that i jus go and not linger. and b a burden. jus try and stay active. my biggest issue is I don't eat rite. if it weren't for the walking I would weigh much more. I'm gonna do better. hot weather makes me eat less. yes this is an amazing support system here. plus the app is very helpful. so hang in there we rite here. good days. bad days. u can throw it all rite here

What a great statement and so true. My great grandma lived to be almost 108 and she passed away in her sleep. That is what I want - to hopefully live the best life possible and to silently go in my sleep. My dad passed away with a sudden heart attack and he was doing what he loved - working on antique tractors.

If we had a choice to just drop dead I think most people would say—- bring on those chocolate malts and lots of meat.

I totally get this, Shir. Life and death is a complicated dichotomy. make sure you are very clear with your wishes. That said, you’re one of my favorite people on here whether you like it or not. 🙃

Shirfleur1–you are a wonderful person and I think most of us really get a kick out of what travels from your brain to your typing fingers to end up in your posts. At this stage of life it is just a matter of balance. Eating good food with friends and spending time with them is so very important. As many have discovered, tomorrow is not promised to anyone.. address those issues that are crucial to your personal health and give yourself some grace with other stuff. Keep having fun— otherwise, whst’s the point?

Just to be clear, I'm not giving up on anything, especially not on life. I like my life and I hope to continue to do so for quite some time. What I am saying is that, I'm not interested in living a long life of poor quality just to be able to say "I'm still here." Your comments touched my heart, and some brought tears to my eyes. This FS community is a very special place, and I'm very glad to be a part of it. Let's continue to work together and support each other as we all strive for better, healthier lives.

I agree with you Shirfleur -- living long just to live long makes no sense. I think my expectations could be biased, so I could be in for a rude shock if my lived experience doesn't match what most of my family has experienced: My mom lived to 91, and even then -- the day she did her intake interview for home hospice because her cancer was overtaking her, she was talking on the phone while standing in line to get her driver's license renewed. My Grandma Rose lived to be 101 and passed away in her sleep in her own apartment, still relatively independent until the very end. I hope to be blessed in the same way, but I know it's a gamble, and anything could happen.

Shirfleur -- you are a bright spot in this community. ❤️ I'm hoping this post isn't in response to any bad news from your doctor that I missed. I feel much the same way as you do, but am hoping it won't come down to that for either of us. Hugs, gal 🤗

Hey Shirlfleur. I am sorry to be a downer - but if you are still here, it's because God needs you for something. Your tasks are not complete on this earth. I don't know what you are here to give, teach, impart, help with - but I do know that you will get your reward when your task is complete. God hasn't forgotten you, he's just still got work for you to do. xx
