luckey13's Journal, 23 May 21

So I realized my first post didn't. Why I am back. I was recently diagnosed with common variable immunodeficiency or CVID. This is an inherited illness and explains all my past and present illnesses. So now I have to rethink how I eat because:
1. I've had a gastric bypass (2006)
2. I'm a Type 1 Diabetic Controlled by diet
3. I'm lactose intolerant
4. My doctor says I need to give up gluten as it causes
inflammation
5. My mouth is "allergic" to all nuts, bananas, citrus, melons, grapes, juices. If the salsa is mild, then it's probably too hot for me. I will get sores in my mouth. I guess I should have prefaced this with I have had dry mouth and dry eyes for my entire life.
6. I am overweight but at this point the doctors are
not pressuring me to lose weight. That being said, they wouldn't be upset if I lost 20 lbs.
7. CVID - One major symptom of this is gut issues. Just
imagine your worst gut issues multiplied by 5.
l
That's my life 24/7. Because of this my Immunologist put me on monthly infusions of plasma to try and bring my antibodies up so the GI issues and infections would stop. Monday is only my 3rd infusion. The group I joined said it will take 6 mths to a year to see any changes in GI issues. If that. In one week I can go up and down 10 lbs. I need 2 sizes of jeans for when the bloating starts and then when it disappears.

So low carb, gluten free, lactose free, nut free, citrus free..I eat pretty simply.

My significant other is the main chef. I don't eat red meat as a rule. Ground pork and pork chops are my thing. He loves baked chicken....with the skin..aaaggghhh! I tear it off!

Just a few things...I'm back because FS works. I found the app before there was a community of supporters, before there was a cookbook - even before the database got so huge! But for me, it works.

Thank you to everyone who is going to cheer me on. I will cheer you on as well. We are on this journey together.

Finally - THANK YOU to all those who have donated and/or are donating plasma. I don't care why you're doing it..but it's saving people's lives. It's saving children's lives! Little did I know I was a child with CVID. That was the 60s. Now we know so much more and you would not believe how many parents are on the Facebook group I am on. Thanks again.

Now I hope this saves, fingers crossed.

Fortunately for all, we now live in a world where food choices for people with medical conditions is so much better. Gluten free has become mainstream, lactose intolerant is mainstream (genetically most of us are to one degree or another). My East Indian neighbor has opened the door to a world of chickpea and cassava flours. So lots of options for you. A little research will be in order but that’s just part of life. Stay out of restaurants for now and learn to cook your own foods at home until you gain some control over your issues. Weight loss would also really help with those inflammation issues. The best of luck and I will be rooting for you.

Kenna Morton you are so right about food choices these days. I love chickpeas, hummus, mild peppers. I'm exploring the Mediterranean diet. I love pretty much everything thing I see in articles about it. Restaurants don't even tempt me. Ever since my gastric bypass I've not been really able to eat out so I just don't.

Wow! It's got to be hard to always having to watch what is in your food. I have some allergies but not serious ones. I hate having to always be aware of wether or not dairy is in my meal etc. That being said, Kenna is right. We live in a world where gluten free is readily available, as are other items you can eat. Good luck with your journey!

That is/was a veRy inspiring & inspirational speech to ponder and analyze. I would luv to STOP eating out. I'm going to make a better effort to stay away from fast-foods & restaurants more than I do now. Thanks for giving me words to meditate on and apply to making adjustments to my personal situation and my husband's too. God bless you and everyone here all ways...Amen
