Got to gym yesterday... I was able to use Arc trainer and bike, couldn't comfortably use either the elliptical or treadmill. No problems with weights.

Going to doctors tonight for xrays... I'm suspecting stress fracture in one of my metasarsals on the top of my foot (hence the pain and swelling). I've broken one before (from trauma though) about 4 years ago, and walked on it for 2 months before realizing it was broken. I'm feeling the same itchy/pain now :( The stress fracture was suggested by one of the personal trainers at the gym - and it makes sense to me due to my past experience.

If it is a break and I need to wear "the boot", I'm not going to let that stop me from going to the gym - I just have to sign a waiver saying if I'm injured further, they are not held responsible - and that it was my choice to continue working out regardless of my injury (as well as showing me what excercises will work for me until I heal).

I've had a stress fracture in my foot before... not fun! I did it to myself while trying to be "healthy" -- walking home from work 3 days a week. Turns out the sandals I was wearing were TERRIBLE for my feet! It took weeks to figure out what was causing the pain; the fracture didn't show up on an x-ray so I ended up going for a nuclear bone scan. A weird experience to say the least. Whatever you do, take care of your injury!!

That's exactly it. He said it's a my shoes don't have enough cushioning between the ground and my feet, so the impact of the walking 2 - 3 km daily on hard concrete is what fractured the metasarsals in my feet. He also said that due to my weight (he clapped me on the back and gave me thumbs up for the good work) I need better arch supports. He said that due to losing the weight - the bones in my feet are going to shift until I reach my goal weight... because of that, they're a little more suceptable to stress related fractures (huh, who knew?) He suggested checking out Penningtons (plus size store) as they have athletic shoes good aimed specifically for the larger ladies. He said there is a very good chance that the fractures will not show up. This happened to me about 4 years back, fractured my right 2nd and 3rd Metasarsals falling down stairs. I kept re-fracturing the bones, because it wasn't being cared for properly, since the fractures didnt' show up until 2 months later after it got significantly worse and I ended up in a walking cast (boot) for 3 months. He said regardless we are going treat it as fractures. He also said due to the swelling and pain in my right foot, he believes I fractured them both. So I am to keep both my feet wrapped with tensers for 4 - 6 weeks, and to keep them elevated while at rest. I asked him if I had to stop going to gym and he said "of course not... but you need to change your cardio routine". I now have to use the bike for cardio for the 4 - 6 weeks. And keeping a walking to a minimum. He said I can try my arc trainer (my favorite machine for cardio), but to stop if I feel any pain at all in my feet. I was also told I have the approval to apply for a placard for parking in handicapped spot for the 4 - 6 weeks :) I told my boyfriend that's going a little too far and he nearly smacked me up side the head saying to GET it as I'm not being lazy but avoiding more injury.
