"I don’t enjoy exercise / cardio / lifting. How can I learn to love it?

This is a common problem, and the best advice we can give is: Stop trying to love the process and love the results instead.

Succinctly, our own u/purplespengler is fond of saying:

I don’t enjoy cleaning my cat’s litterbox, but I do it anyway because I enjoy my house not smelling like cat shit.

Put more eloquently by a poster from r/weightroom:

Getting good at pretty much anything involves doing boring shit over and over again to make progress. It doesn’t matter what it is. If you want to get good at playing guitar because you love performing on stage you still have to run scales, train your ear, learn music theory, learn that crazy song that your drummer likes even though you hate it, and do various exercises to improve your technical abilities. It doesn’t matter if you find it boring. If you want to be good, you have to do that stuff so you can do the really fun stuff well. And you have to do it in some capacity every day whether you feel like it or not.

Same thing with strength training, or owning a business or anything else. So, yes, you should enjoy your hobbies but, on the other hand, you won’t ever get good at those hobbies unless you’re willing to work hard for years on end at a lot of things you don’t like that are encompassed within that hobby.

If you want to get good results in the realm of fitness, this is something that you’ll have to figure out how to accept and move past. If you let your consistency and effort in your workouts be dictated by how much you enjoy them, you’re not going to get good results.

All that being said, some r/Fitness users have been able to find a balance by compartmentalizing their “training fitness” and their “fun fitness” into separate activities – Going to the gym to train as part of a routine, but also participating in local club / community sports in their spare time to let loose and have a bit of fun while being physically active. This is a good option to explore if it fits within your schedule."

Another good read from you and spot on. What works for me to keep structure with my workouts is having a spreadsheet of everything on my agenda. I mark everything off when I'm done and its so gratifying to look at. It makes me proud. I don't HAVE to work off a spreadsheet but in the beginning it made me accountable, now I just keep it as a part of my regime. I've never been so active. Some of it can be boring, but at least it doesn't feel like a chore. Its become a daily thing. If for any reason the weight resistance or treadmill doesn't happen, I get active with something else. No more sitting all day and all night. Sitting is for when I wind down at the day's end. That's it. The greatest part of it all is the difference! I'm healthier, stronger, happier.... I look better, sleep better...its life changing.

Two cat shits in one week? 🤣 Interesting. I'm glad I like to lift. I don't every day LOVE going there- but I will go every day until I can't go anymore. And I will look a little stronger and a little thinner and a little better each week. ;)

My personal feeling is that it's better to find an activity you love. The activity you WILL do is always better than the one you won't. And I find that wanting to do my favorite activities better leads me to be more motivated to do the ones I'm less crazy about. eg. I'm beginning to work in jogging so I'll be in better shape for cross-country ski season

Thanks, kissangel girl, you're absolutely right. I do my best not to sit for long unless I'm at the movies. People may lynch me if I stand there. Thanks, Erika. Lol, jazzy! DP, that part was half the reason I posted it for you, hahaha!

You're right Wyoming. It's funny though, for me the article is on the money when they say you don't have to love it at first but if you love the results you grow to love the process. Lifting isn't fun in itself to even me, but knowing what it does makes it fun. In other words, I wouldn't go to failure where the pain is greatest if there was no reward lol

I needed to see this post! I’m moving toward Phase 2 of trying to live a healthy lifestyle (exercise). I’m doing well with eating and I’m supposed to start going to the gym in 2 weeks (September 1). I was considering pushing it my start date to September 15 for no reason other than I hate working out. But I also hate worrying about my health, being overweight and not looking good in clothes....Hmmm what do I hate more??? This post just help to change how I look at exercise. Thank you Diablo360x!

Same thought, Chris. " My one cat doesn't jump on my counter "... I was going to say " No but the other four do!". Lmao. 🤣😂

When the subject comes up of if I go to the gym to eat more, I always say I go to look better, be healthier and mainly just stronger(strength is close to health for me as muscle helps bone and I need bone health). I don’t love the gym but I do like it. I don’t love my results but I like them. Love is a gradual thing for me hehe.
