Your old habits got you to where you are today. You must develop new habits to dig yourself out. You can't rely on motivation alone after a while. Motivation can be the spark you need but after the first few weeks you have to develop discipline. You don't need motivation to brush your teeth or shower, you shouldn't need motivation to stick to a calorie deficit/surplus/maintenance or a workout routine.

@Rosio19, Joko Willink (retired Navy SEAL) says that getting out of bed at the first alarm rather than snoozing is the first victory of the day, and that if you show discipline in that moment, it carries through the entire day.
I wouldn't know -- it has been a long time since I set an alarm for 4:30 am and actually got up when it went off, but that's what he says lol

Very well said. Couldn't agree more. Motivation is fairly transient and can disappear quickly however habits will pull you through day after day. Trick is to have the habits that support your goals!

Very true! Do you know that wayeee back in the day, the word "discipline" was used to describe a skill or craft that one specialized in. The term has since been bastardized. However, I really like to use it in this context. It definitely took discipline to make it to goal (i.e. learning and refining the skills and tools needed to make weight loss and life style changes a reality). I did not rely on motivation either, I also didn't rely on "feeling like it" as feelings are just as transient as motivation. I DID rely on momentum. Momentum and patience :-)

such good words Diablo360x. This cold weather has closed all my options for walking and exercise and that has bummed me out to no end. Just wait until everything warms up and opens up again, I am going to follow your words and dig myself out of my own doing...haha...thank you!!!

It can't be done in one day or one week, it all takes time. Dang it!

I'll add that if you have a tendency to resist change, work with it, and make just small changes over time. I have to work WITH the rebellious toddler that lives inside me.
