Khbutler's Journal, 22 Oct 18

So I’ve made a diet decision. I’m changing my strictly lo-cal eating to a high protein low carb thing. This is new for me. I’ve always been intimated by it b/c, well, I love carbs. But I think I’ve got my stubborn mind wrapped around eating low carbs. My first day was yesterday.
I’m in over my head it think. Why? B/c I don’t understand much of what you high protein low fat people are saying. Geez I feel dumb right now.

keto is high fat not high protein, just need to make sure you are not talking about a different diet plan

I’m not talking about ketos. More of an Atkins type philosophy, I think. I don’t think I’m regimented enough to do ketos. The more I think, the more confused I get. That happens to me often. Lol.

atkins is also low carb higher fat and definitely not high protein. they are very very similar. high protein can be dangerous for your health that is why you don't see folks doing that. 50% protein is max with a mix of other macro's to your choice. even body builders don't tend to do high protein diets, they mix with carbs or fats and carbs. atkins starts the induction at 20 carbs max for 3 weeks which is just like keto. there are specific rules the first 3 weeks of what you are not allowed near in the carb department. then you get a list of second stage foods you carefully add a little at a time to see if you stay in ketosis. both are based on that. some people can't handle the carbs and lose weight so they are mandated to stay at 20 or below. some can add 5 gr's a week and still lose. so you can see if it very much like keto. you may want to just eat lower carb healthy foods, cut out sugar and refined flour products and keep your macro's ore balanced. listening to you talk I don't know if you are going to feel comfortable micro managing what you eat each day and plan it out.

Khbutler, don't set yourself up for failure. I can hear it in your post. Carbs don't have to be the enemy. Eat properly today as you research low carb programs. Then follow the program carefully. If it is too difficult, research a more balanced approach that includes carbs.

There is no right answer for the perfect program. Everyone is different.

I am following Keto because it works for me. I was diagnosed with pre diabetes and a lot of family history with diabetes. I never thought I would be able to do it either. But I am 4 months in and loving the fact that food no longer dictates me and my sugar no longer crashes leaving me always wondering where my next meal was coming from. A lot of people have normal metabolic systems and they can handle carbs. I am not one of them.

Erquiaga - when I say low carbs I mean low “bad” carbs. Lots of “good” carbs. The hubs and I want to concentrate on eating lean meats, no bad carbs (white bread, white potatoes, white rice, pasta, etc), & some fruits. Ya know, a diabetic diet basically. A balanced, healthy eating type plan. Nothing extreme. :)

Atkins induction puts you into ketosis. This might help you.. Just keep it simple. https://www.ruled.me/guide-keto-diet/

All fruits increase blood sugar in diabetics and are not "good" because they are fruit. One strawberry raised my friends blood sugars over 100 points! But what ever works for you!

that is what I was suggesting a more balanced healthy approach and I really thing that is a good one you can follow. simple and easy!

Khbutler, no matter whether you call it Atkins or keto, low carb on this site typically means 20 to 50 g carbs per day. Typically the plate is less 1/4 or less carb foods. It sounds like you are doing somewhat higher carbs. Just know, if you go truly low carb, you will need to supplement salt because the kidneys flush salt out. If you start getting headaches, dizziness, constipation, have something salty like broth or bouillon.

Just to clarify, I’m not a diabetic. I have great numbers (thank goodness). We just think a diabetic diet would be a moderate way to go.☺️
